The Mentality of Change

changeHow many times have we told ourselves that we want change? We tell ourselves we don’t want to be lazy anymore or that we don’t want to be fat and out of shape. We are tired of lounging around without purpose. We think about it and talk about it like it’s some sort of distant fantasy. Purpose or an active lifestyle doesn’t have to be a distant fantasy.

How do I change that aspect of my life? What can I do to add the get-up-and-go to my life? What in my life can motivate me enough to change? I understand change can only happen when we want to change ourselves. However, there has to be a motivation for this change to remain. We also have the uncanny ability to forget about our motivations. So, we have to remind ourselves DAILY what our motivation is. To change our behavior we need to change our hearts and make up our minds.

Sometimes action is this hardest part of change. We dream about it and treat it like it’s impossible. We have become so use to instant gratification that we don’t want to work for what we want. If we can’t get it immediately then it’s just a pipe dream. It has infected every aspect of our lives. Finances to spirituality to weight loss have all been ravaged by instant gratification. We want instant paycheck or instant answered prayer. We want it now with as little effort as possible. We want that beach body, smaller clothing size or
the all-inclusive “success” without sacrifice.

This is the first change of heart we need to accomplish, valuing hard work. Learning the value of hard work increases the value of that which is gained. Buckle down, get a grip and earn what we desire by the sweat of our brow. Riches or knowledge gained without effort is squandered away without thought. Be decisive in your goals and get to work. You will find that even weight loss that is earned is easier to keep off than a quick fix diet. It’s the journey not the end result that gives you that ultimate lifestyle you want.

Death to the Yo-Yo lifestyle!

About the Author

After coming home from the Marine Corps with fractures in both hips, I eventually gained about 100 pounds. I obviously was not able to workout the way I wanted to nor did I have the motivation to. Three years later I was finally tired of being overweight but still not able to lose the weight. That's when I met Frank C. and the Fat Man Unleashed team. They gave me the motivation I needed to push through. I have lost about 30 pounds in total so far and I am well on my way to being unleashed!

You are right. We are used to instant gratification. We do not intend to work hard for our dreams. And this attitude effects every aspect of our lives. We need to get out of it by first sheer determination and then hard work.

    Thank you for inspiration.

still.. I have tried a lot and there is no change… perhaps, with some people it is hopeless, no matter how hard you try…

Hopelessness only resides where it is allowed. Always keeping a positive mental attitude is key to everything we set out to do. We need to get “try” out of our vocabulary because it leaves room for “accepted” failure. Failed attempts is okay as long as you don’t stay down. It is only when we give up that we truly fail. When I started running I couldn’t seem to get any better, I thought it was hopeless to try. Then something happened as I kept Doing it, running became easier. I had to push past my mental barriers to command my body to do what it needed to do. Starting out I couldn’t run more than a quarter mile without falling to my knees in agony. However, after about 3 months of pushing myself along with the help of my supporters I was able to run 3 miles in 22min without stopping. Limitations are illusion that we give ourselves. I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me, Phillipians 4:13. Keep going and stay motivated!

      Jim,

Don’t try, just do. And if its not working, do something else. Diets work, its that we don’t work the diets. So work it man, don’t let it work you.

  4. This goes along with something I heard recently. It might have been Tony Robbins. Don’t think about doing something tomorrow. Do it today. Thanks for your thoughts. I am really enjoying your site.

  5. My man don’t let anything stop you from reaching your goals. Take your time and remain consistent and you will get where you want to be.

Thanks Matt. One of the reasons a person may want to change is because he wants to impress a certain girl.

    • JessNo Gravatar says:

Peter, that is true to an extent. Impressions are temporary and rarely give enough fuel for a permanent change. Something like, you want to be healthy so you can be around for your kids or because the change also affects the lives of those we already hold so dearly. These types of motivations have a statistically higher chance of success than trying to just make an impression. Thanks for the comment and stay motivated!

  7. Great post! So absoulutely true! Nothing comes easy, or if it does, it just doesnt last! Only with hard work and commitmment we can achieve everything we want! We have to live in the present, not in the past or future. Nothing is more important than NOW! We can’t change the past, so it’s no point remminesceing about it, or wishing about the future! Just gotta be in the presesnt and work as hard as you can to accomplish what you want! Prayers don’t work, nothing works but sweat and real hard work! So instead of wishing, just get on it,unless you start taking steps towards what you want, you will be in the same “wishing spot” forever!
