What’s That Weird Taste In My Mouth?

Yuck, nasty taste in my mouthOver the last few weeks I have been getting this weird taste in my mouth. I would normally just drink some water and then ignore it. That doesn’t work anymore. The taste is too intense now, and not in a good, rich chocolate cake sort of way. It will only subside after I eat, due to the foods different flavor masking the odd taste.

I have been trying to figure out what it is, but can’t quite put my finger on it. It started occurring after I incorporated more intensity into my work out routine. Around that same time I introduced creatine and amino acids in my post workout shakes. I thought that maybe I wasn’t getting enough hydration, but trust me, I drink tons of water and it doesn’t feel the same as having a dry mouth.

What does it taste like? Well, I think it tastes like the whey protein and glutamine that I drink. The taste is mostly on the underneath, towards the back and sides my tongue. Could it be the protein and glutamine? I don’t think I drink too much of it. Could there be some remnants collecting under my tongue?

What the heck is that weird taste in my mouth? Have you had any similar weird tastes in your mouth? Any professionals out that with any advice?

I once had the taste of cucumber from my subway sandwich in my mouth, icky. Either get used to it, chew gum, or stop doing what your doing to get the taste in the first place.

Have you taken any medication or still are? This can be the problem, some times different substances in them can react with something you eat giving you different unwelcome effects.

But feeling bitter taste, Unami taste, the latter you taste from certain amino acids (glutamate, aspartate and related compounds) both tastes are caused by raised Ca2+ in you mouth. That’s what causing the weired taste.

What you can do is try to find a mouth wash with chemicals that would join the Ca2+ removing the tongue buds of registering the “taste”.
Try buying some with sulphuric solution that should do it.

But I think that what you experience is the taste of creatine, creatine tastes very bitter, I personally have to rinse my mouth 3-4 times before I get rid of the damn taste after consuming it, small particles always stuck between the teeth, under the tongue and on it, making you still feel the damn taste.

But the mouth wash with sulphur makes it a lot faster to clean that shit out.

  3. Hi Israel, I would also ask if you’re taking any medications. That’s the only time I’ve experienced a funny taste that just won’t go away.

You might want to get it checked it by your doctor. Let us know how it goes for you!

I have having the same problem right now.(I actually found this site googling the problem) After reading what you think your problem is I now believe it could be caused by all the yogurt I have been eating since that is about when it started.

One note I must make is that you should NEVER take amino acid or protein supplements. Excess of these do NOT do anything for you. Excess protein and amino acids can do horrible damage to your kidneys by the excretion of excess nitrogen. It can also lead to OBESITY, heart disease, kidney stones, cancer, and osteoporosis. The only people that need extra protein are world class athletes and infants. and they only need slightly more than typical people. You, my friend, are not a world class athlete and even they should not be drinking protein/amino acid shakes. I am a nursing/nutrition student in college. I have already taken several nutrition classes and I am speaking from knowledge. Excess protein does NOT make bigger or better muscle, working the muscle does. These protein shakes so many people drink is just an example of companies trying to make money off the uneducated. Please read a college textbook and not silly advertisements. You will discover what your body needs and that there is hardly ever an instance when more= better. Even with vitamins! I hate to go off on a tangent to a stranger, but I wish that more people knew exactly what they are doing to their body. I really hope you take my advice. Good luck!

      Nikki,

First off I love how people who don’t know the whole situation and understand it like to give their opinion on things.

When on any diet where you are trying to lose weight your daily protein intake is important because it helps maintain a healthy metabolic rate. When you decrease the amount of calories you eat in order to lose weight, your body switches and burns more of the protein from muscle cells in order to maintain a balance in your body’s energy needs. An adequate intake of protein, along with sufficient calories, limits the breakdown of lean muscle for energy provision. After reviewing some of the research out there, the National Academy of Sciences reported that the only known danger from high-protein diets is for individuals with kidney disease. They recommend that 10 percent to 40 percent of daily calories come from protein. They point out that increased protein could be helpful in treating obesity. There is also accumulating evidence that extra protein may help prevent osteoporosis.

Israel is consuming about 2000-2300 calories per day. For adequate fat burning our dietitian recommends his diet be made up of about 40% protein. This means you should be consuming about 200-230 grams of protein per day. For the 3 meals and 3 protein snacks (about 1400 calories) he is consuming on average 140 grams of protein (or about 30% of his total calories from protein). While, yes, the protein shakes are adding in more protein they are also adding in more calories. Drinking the calories is a lot easier then adding in 600 more calories that you physically have to eat. You can see that by eating just the 3 meals and 3 protein snacks he is short on protein intake which is why our dietitian recommended the additional protein shakes. Yes, if you consume too much protein without increasing your calories you could be putting stress on your kidneys but Israel is increasing calories and protein (let’s not forget the fruit being added in which increases the carbs too). It is also true that eating more protein is not going to bulk up your muscles but that’s not our goal with the protein. The goal is to prevent the body from breaking down muscle to use for energy and also to replace torn muscles which happens when you workout.

Adding in the 2 extra shakes per day will not lead to obesity (as we see both Israel and I are losing weight). If we didn’t add in those shakes we would still have to get the extra calories from somewhere and if we just consume carbohydrates our blood sugar spikes and if we just consume a fat your blood lipids rise.

If you were consuming 50% or more of your calories from protein I would say it would be in excess however the amount we are consuming is not in excess nor is it harmful (unless we were to have kidney disease).

We appreciate your comment, and we hope this doesn’t end your relationship with Fat Man Unleashed in the future.
