The Best Foods For Men

Dr. Kal, Doctor, Health and Fitness Instructor. Former Fat Man.

My favorite magazine is Men’s Health Magazine. Men’s Health has the best writers. It also has the best combination of fitness and non-fitness related information. In the June, 2008 issue is a value list called: The 125 Best Foods For Men. If you don’t have a subscription, I suggest you pick up this month’s issue because the list alone is worth the price of the magazine.

Of all of the 125 Best Foods, I have some favorites. I will share them with you today.

Food #2: Quaker Weight Control Oatmeal

They suggest the Banana Bread flavor, but I personally prefer the Cinnamon flavor. We all know that oatmeal is healthy for us. But this oatmeal has added fiber and protein making it great for weight loss. They are also inexpensive and a part of the Don’t Go Broke Diet.

Food #68: South Beach Diet Pepperoni Pizza

I love SBD Pizza, especially the Pepperoni. It tastes great. It is very high in protein (almost 40% protein). It is also high in fiber. SBD Pizzas are a great weight loss meal. I would have put them in my Don’t Go Broke Diet, but they are too expensive. All of the DGB Diet meals have to be under $2.00.

Food #75: Jimmy Dean D-lights

These Jimmy Dean D-lights sandwiches taste like the fast food breakfast sandwiches, but they are much healthier. The magazine suggests the Canadian Bacon variety, but I prefer the Turkey Sausage kind. These sandwiches are made with lean meats, egg-whites, low-fat cheese, and whole-wheat English muffins. They are high in protein. Jimmy Dean D-lights are also inexpensive and a part of the Don’t Go Broke Diet.

I did not like all of the food selections, but one in particular bothered me.

Food #33: Accelerade

Accelerade is a sports drink with protein in it. The average guy should only drink a sports drink if he is working out in the heat for an extended period of time. And, if you do need a sports drink, you do not need an expensive sports drink. Accelerade is like Gatorade with 4 grams of whey protein added. Whey protein is the best protein, but 4 grams of it should not increase the cost by that much.

Most of the food selections on this list are great options for overall health and weight loss. The list is intended for men, but women could benefit as well.

We have some of the same favorites, love the pizza and the oatmeal. Even if the article was in a men’s magazine!

  2. Food #2: Quaker Weight Control Oatmeal” Man Oatmeal beat out PIZZA! What is the world coming to when pizza is not good for you… lol
@ Isreal: What if you made a wheat pizza dough with oatmeal?
    Hmmmm? No I guess not…

Great topic Dr. Kal… I need all the help I can get… I’m working up my diet… I just passed the I think I should do it stage and now after find this site I’m at the “ya, I should do it stage”… I hope by Monday I can start to drink my water… lol I stopped the soda a few months ago, so it’s just one step after an other…. although I wish I could ‘JUST Do IT’… But I’m getting there…

I’m also a big fan of the oatmeal. Have you ever tried the oatmeal to-go bars. Great for when you can’t have a sit down for your meal.

I use to love Men’s Health Magazine. But I find as I am growing older, married, and a father, that less and less of their articles speak to me. It seems more suited for younger single guys who want to seduce women and pick-up babes at the bar. I’ve started reading Men’s Fitness Magazine. It has more fitness info and less how to meet babes stuff.

Who doesn’t love pizza and oatmeal! Even if the article was in a men’s magazine!

  6. @ John: LOL I know what you mean… Before kids I has a subscription… After my son came I just did not read it so much… But the my wife wanted to have another child… And I remember an article called that subject… it gave detailed instructions that I follow on how to make sure you will have a “son”… I wanted 3 boy…. when the deed was done I told my wife… “I just made another son”! Well, it worked… Well, kind of… I had a girl… then 2 more girls after that….lol
But I would not traid them for the world…

  7. Accelerade is gold! Good get with that one. But yeah most sports drinks are extremely high in sugar and unless you are doing sustained exercise is usually worth staying way from.

Sorry to rain on this parade – but I’d say sticking with veggies and lean meats, fish, fowl and eggs is the cleanest and best way to go. Not particularly glamourous, and definitely not PC, but it just flat out works.

  14. I’m surprised that no dairy products were described. Studies show that moderate amounts of dairy products (with fat) help to stimulate muscle growth and weight loss.

  15. I’m starting over… I have to get this thing right and keep off the weight… I got down to 345 … I’ve peek out 2 weeks ago at 376… I’m down 3LBS as of today.
